Initialement paru en 1958, puis maintes fois réédité, ce premier essai de l'architecte constitue une sorte de manifeste, dont l'importance a pu être jugée comparable à «La charte d'Athènes» de Le Corbusier. L'ouvrage réunit les textes des précédentes éditions, permettant ainsi d'en suivre l'évolution et les strates successives, et comprend quelques commentaires de l'auteur sur le XXIe siècle.
